51: Hoodoo There

Jay paddled past a floating island of water hyacinths, perfume rising from the purple flowers that called for him to sleep. He’d found the dead boy’s boat easily enough. An aluminum flatboat with a thirty-five horsepower Evinrude in back.

He didn’t want to start the engine and broadcast his location to the Heimdall Brotherhood.

The island was empty of people, but the center had been cleared out and turned into some sort of training camp. Berms with shredded targets at one end, barracks built of tents at the other. Ammunition, but no arms. He took a flat of bottled water and a few MREs and got the hell out of there.

The sun became an ember on the opposite end of the sky. He wanted to get west, so he followed the sun for as long as it gave him light. The water helped, but he needed rest.

As he paddled, his heartbeat slowly became a roar drowning out the sounds of the swamp. The towering trees leered down at him, powdering him with their pollen. Their tiny messengers buzzed in his ears and bit his skin in secret codes that told him where to go.

A face in the water mouthed words to him. Its voice gurgled from the bottom.

Welcome home.

“I’m looking for my Papa Andre’s fishing camp. They said it got washed out when the government opened the spillway.”

The old water keeps everything. You’re born in me and to me you will return.
